Introduction

Department of human Genetics has been established on June 12, 2007, for the first time in the history of Pakistan, to study the genetic diversity and ecology of human population and rare genetic diseases in various ethnic and isonym groups particularly in rural communities and to develop human resources through education, training and research to cope with the problems caused by high inbreeding and consanguinity in our population as a result of social and cultural taboos.

  • To study the genetic diversity and ecology of human population, particularly of common and rare genetic diseases (recessive, dominant, sex-linked, etc., as well as due to chromosomal aberrations) in various ethnic and isonym groups, particularly in rural communities
  • To develop human resources through education, training and research to cope with the problems caused by high inbreeding and consanguinity in our population as a result of social and cultural taboos.
  • To provide facilities for advanced studies and research leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. in areas of human genetics, cytogenetics, population genetics, medical genetics, clinical genetics, biotechnology, etc.
  • To produce research papers for publication in national and international journals of repute.
  • To arrange for lectures, national and international seminars, courses for further studies and in-service training for those already engaged in research.
  • To established academic links with other national and international institutions.
  • To provide genetic counseling to control the spread of hereditary maladies and creating awareness in communities.

Facilities

The Department has facilities to carry out research leading to Master, M.Phil. and Ph.D.
Training of medical graduates for specialization in human genetics to become Teachers, Cytogeneticists, Genetic Counsellor, Diagnosticians of hereditary problems and Researchers. Diagnosing and analyzing on all kinds of chromosomal aberrations encountered in clinical genetics and/or research projects. Opinion on prepared chromosome slides.Diagnosis of hereditary ailments, genetic syndromes, etc. Genetic counseling as first or second opinion.
