Mission
Research in Health Sciences has been neglected in the past. Under the umbrella of University of Health Sciences, department is determined to boost research activities in basic and clinical medical sciences. Our mission is to produce Ph.Ds of international standard in collaboration with foreign universities. MOU with university of Texas has already been signed for exchange of graduate students and faculty members.
Areas of Research
Main area of research is Oncology. Following projects are in progress in the department:
In vitro Cytotoxity of Chemotherapeutic drugs of mammary carcinoma.
Prediction of efficacy of Chemotherapy in Breast Cancer-development of efficacy index.
Study of Benign and malignant effusions: Blood Group antigen versus P53.
Role of P27 protein (cell cycle Cylin D kinase inhibitor) in chemically induced breast tumours of female Albino rats.
Human Papilloma virus in cervical intraepithelial neoplasis and invasive carcinoma.
Assessment of HER-2/ neu status by Immuno-histochemical (IHC) method and gene amplification by molecular PCR method in localized /metastatic carcinoma of the breast.
Association between Homocytiene level and Myocardial infarction & influence of B vitamin Therapy on Homocytiene levels.
Immunohistochemical Detection and correlation of the Histidine Decarboxylase and CYFRA 21-1-(Ck-19) in primary lung cancers.
Expression of HER 2/neu and its correlation with the histological grading of colorectal carcinoma.
Immunohistochemical expression and correlation of mammaglobin with scarf-bloom Richardson grading system of breast carcinoma.
Expression of bcl-2 oncoprotein in uterine leiomyoma as an apoptosis inhibitor.
Correlation of estrogen receptor status with the Ki-67 proliferative index in carcinoma of the breast.
Study of Ki-67 labeling index with grading and staging colorectal carcinoma.
Role of DNA Analysis in sexually assault victims.

Academic Collaboration
In addition to a meaningful interaction with other departments of basic and clinical sciences within UHS and its affiliated colleges and institutions, the department will coordinate and collaborate in training and research with other national biomed9ical institutions like the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology Lahore (INMOL) and National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE). Linkages are being developed with foreign institutions both for collaborative research and for short term training of personnel in specialized techniques and procedures.
Research Activities
The members of our faculty pursue an active involvement in the student recruitment, curricular development, teaching and research. It consists of a dedicated team of individuals with varying interests, duties and responsibilities. Teaching will be based on formal lectures, tutorials, problem based learning, discussions, seminars and laboratory training.
Admission
Postgraduate programme at UHS in the department of Pathology is research training programme leading to Ph.D Candidates who are medical/ dental graduate and possess
Postgraduate/ higher diploma are eligible for admission in Ph.D programme. The department also runs M.Phil leading to Ph.D programme for bright fresh graduates/ graduates with teaching/ practical experience.
