Founder Chairman Board of Governors
Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ahmad Chaudhry is the founder and the Chairman Board of Governor University of Health Sciences. As the architect of the concept of UHS, he also has the rare distinction of relentlessly pursuing the idea and turning it into a reality within a short span of 2 years.
Coming from a distinguished family, after his medical graduation, he chose to serve in rural areas such as Muzaffargh. He was commissioned in the Pakistan Army, during the 1965 war, during which he was injured in Fazalka Sector. His year and a half service in Pakistan Army probably explains his everlasting admiration for the Pakistan Army.
In 1967, he proceeded to the United Kingdom where he taught at the Oxford Group of Hospitals as a senior lecturer in Surgery and also served in Guys Hospital, London.
FRCS from London and Edinburgh and a Fellow of College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan he became a leading surgeon of Pakistan, where he has served in different capacities since 1980 when he returned from UK. He was elevated to the office of Professor of Surgery and then led Sheikh Zayed Medical Complex Lahore to new heights of glory, as Chairman. He was appointed Executive Director Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, leaving behind him indelible mark of his leadership capabilities on each institution.
In year 2000 he was picked up as member of the cabinet as Minister for Health, Punjab. He proposed, piloted and implemented a number of new legislative proposals such as the law for Autonomous Medical Institutions. He upgraded the THQs, DHQs and Basic Health Units, bringing unprecedented improvements in the health facilities of rural areas. He also established three medical colleges at Sialkot, Rahimyar Khan and Gujranwala. In line with the governments decision to devolve powers to the districts, he as the Minister Health devolved the purchasing powers with the Health Departments to the newly created tier of District Governments.
In 2002 he was appointed the Chairman Board of Governors UHS where he began from scratch to carve out the UHS, which is now a flourishing center of academic and professional excellence. Working on honorary basis for the UHS from the very first day, his altruism and untiring effort for the UHS stands out as evidence for his commitment and selflessness. He devoted all his energies to establish and guide the UHS through its formative phase to a blooming institution. He has successfully instituted a foolproof examination and registration system, which is in its very essence a break from the conservative evaluation system that has remained in vogue for the last fifty years in Pakistan. With 42 scholars preparing for their Ph. D and M Phil in various basic disciplines, the university is the pioneer in medical education at doctorate level.
