Post Graduate Medical Institute, Lahore was established in 1974 in a block in King Edward Medical College, Lahore with the aim of providing postgraduate teaching and training to doctors in both clinical and basic subjects and to meet the shortage of medical teaching staff in newly established medical colleges. In the beginning this Institute provided 23 courses which gradually over the period of time has increased. Now PGMI is running 60 different courses, which includes 12 Diplomas and 48 Degree Courses.
This Institute caters not only the needs of the province of Punjab but also of other provinces. Up till now more than 7500 students have been enrolled in Post Graduate Medical Institute, Lahore and 3000 doctors have completed the training. These include doctors not only from Punjab but also from Sindh, NWFP, Balochistan, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Federal Government, FATA, Pakistan Army as well as foreign students from the SARC and Middle East countries.
